Volunteers Respond While Irene Relief Efforts Continue

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE . . . (St. Albans, VT – September 13, 2011)  As the Vermont & The New Hampshire Valley American Red Cross continues with their relief efforts in the wake of Tropical Storm Irene, members of a Disaster Action Team responded today to a single-family house fire in St. Albans City, Vermont.

Upon receiving the call, Disaster Action Team members responded to the scene of the fire and interviewed the family to determine their emergency needs.  Assistance was provided to help with food and clothing.  In addition to providing assistance to those displaced by disaster, volunteer DAT members can, when requested, assist first responders with rehabilitative services in the form of hydration and food.  The Disaster Action Teams respond day or night, 365 days a year.

Since Tropical Storm Irene struck Vermont, this call is the fourth for Red Cross disaster services volunteers to assist those impacted by fire.  This work demonstrates the need for the usual activities of the Red Cross to continue despite involvement in the large-scale relief operation prompted by Irene.  While the last of the Red Cross shelters opened in response to Irene closed today, the Red Cross continues to provide client casework, disaster mental health services, the distribution of bulk items and is an active participant in long-term recovery planning.

Fielding multiple requests in a relatively short time highlights the fact that many of our neighbors are facing significant challenges in already difficult times.  However, it also places a spotlight on a vibrant and dedicated corps of Red Cross disaster volunteers who are ready to address the need for emergency assistance within our communities.

The American Red Cross is a non-governmental organization and relies upon the donations of community members to ensure that disaster services are available.  American Red Cross emergency assistance is provided without charge to those in need.  To help victims of disaster across Vermont and New Hampshire’s Upper Valley, donations can be made to the American Red Cross by sending a contribution to the American Red Cross, 05401 or by going on line to redcrossvtnhuv.org.  Please specify Disaster Services in the memo of your check.
